Analiza spektralna pokazuje, że pierwsze dwie trzecie Neptuna składa się z mieszaniny stopionych skał, wody, ciekłego amoniaku i metanu. Zewnętrzna jedna trzecia to mieszanina podgrzanych gazów składających się z wodoru, helu, wody i metanu. Metan nadaje Neptunowi niebieski kolor chmur.
Popularna fikcja głosi, że Neptun był kolejnym światem terraformowanym przez starożytnych, w jakiś sposób otrzymał stałe jądro i przekształcił się w pokrytą oceanami kulę, choć wciąż pokrytą niebieską mgiełką, którą można zobaczyć z kosmosu. Nie ma na to jednak żadnych dowodów, a nawet gdyby były one prawdziwe, wszyscy ludzie, którzy tam pozostali, dawno temu zostali odcięci od cywilizacji i z pewnością byliby łatwym łupem dla Legionu Ciemności.
Neptun to dynamiczna planeta z kilkoma dużymi, ciemnymi plamami przypominającymi huragany na Jowiszu. Największa z nich, znana jako Wielka Ciemna Plama, jest wielkości Ziemi i przypomina Wielką Czerwoną Plamę na Jowiszu. Mała chmura o nieregularnym kształcie, poruszająca się na wschód, krąży wokół Neptuna co około 16 godzin. Jest to tak zwany „Skuter” i prawdopodobnie jest chmurą wznoszącą się nad głębszym pokładem chmur.
Wysoko w atmosferze Neptuna zaobserwowano długie jasne chmury, podobne do chmur cirrus na Ziemi. Na niskich północnych szerokościach geograficznych smugi chmur rzucały cienie na pokłady chmur poniżej.
Na Neptunie odnotowano najsilniejsze wiatry spośród wszystkich planet. Większość wiatrów wieje tam na zachód, w kierunku przeciwnym do obrotu planety. W pobliżu Wielkiej Ciemnej Plamy wiatry wieją z prędkością do 2000 kilometrów na godzinę.

Spectral Analysis shows that the first two thirds of Neptune is composed of a mixture of molten rock, water, liquid ammonia and methane. The outer third is a mixture of heated gases comprised of hydrogen, helium, water and methane. Methane gives Neptune its blue cloud color.
Popular fiction holds that Neptune was yet another world terraformed by the ancients, somehow given a solid core and turned into an ocean-covered sphere, though still covered by the expanse of blue haze that can be seen from space. There’s no proof of this, however, and even if it were true, any humans left there were long ago cut off from civilization, and surely would have been easy prey for the Dark Legion.
Neptune is a dynamic planet with several large, dark spots reminiscent of Jupiter’s hurricane-like storms. The largest spot, known as the Great Dark Spot, is about the size of the earth and is similar to the Great Red Spot on Jupiter. A small, irregularly shaped, eastward-moving cloud is scooting around Neptune every 16 hours or so. This scooter as it has been dubbed could be a plume rising above a deeper cloud deck.
Long bright clouds, similar to cirrus clouds on Earth, were seen high in Neptune’s atmosphere. At low northern latitudes cloud streaks casting their shadows on cloud decks below.
The strongest winds on any planet were measured on Neptune. Most of the winds there blow westward, opposite to the rotation of the planet. Near the Great Dark Spot, winds blow up to 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) an hour.
